Braces

Braces FAQs

Hohl Orthodontics

Will braces hurt?

Answer: Initially, you might feel some discomfort or soreness for a few days as your teeth adjust to the braces. Over time, this discomfort should diminish. If you experience persistent pain, we can discuss ways to alleviate it.

How do I manage discomfort from braces?

Answer: Rinsing with warm saltwater or using over-the-counter pain relief can help ease any discomfort. Also, sticking to softer foods for a few days after adjustments can reduce irritation.

How do I properly clean my braces?

Answer: Regular brushing and flossing are crucial. Using a soft-bristled toothbrush and specialized orthodontic brushes can clean around the brackets and wires effectively. We can demonstrate the best techniques during your visits.

Can I participate in sports or musical activities with braces?

Answer: Absolutely! While it's essential to protect your mouth, using a mouthguard during physical activities helps safeguard your braces and teeth. We can provide suitable mouthguards upon request.

What should I do if a bracket breaks or comes loose?

Answer: Always notify us of a broken or loose bracket - quickly submit a Repair Request Form from our website. In the meantime, if the bracket is still attached but causing discomfort, applying orthodontic wax can provide temporary relief. Avoiding hard or sticky foods can prevent further damage.

Will braces affect my eating habits or speech?

Answer: Initially, you might need some time to adjust to eating and speaking with braces. Avoiding sticky or hard foods and practicing speaking can help you adapt faster.

What happens if I have an orthodontic emergency?

Answer: If you experience severe pain or have a significant issue, contact our office immediately. We have after-hours contacts for emergencies and will guide you on what steps to take.
